How to Prevent Boiler Breakdowns

All Guides   /   How to Prevent Boiler Breakdowns

Whilst we provide the very best boiler repair service, we also want our customers to have as few breakdowns as possible. The reason for this is simple – going without heating and hot water even for a few hours can be very inconvenient, especially when you have a few people living under the same roof. To help you get the most out of your boiler for longer, here are some top tips from our Gas Safe engineers.

Protect your pipes

It’s very easy and affordable to protect your central heating by installing lagging. This insulates the pipes and keeps them safe from cracking and bursting by keeping the heat inside, which is especially effective when autumn arrives.

Use less heat during summer

Notice that we said to use less heat rather than none at all? By turning your heating off during summer, you give your boiler a rest and use a lot less energy. However, like your car, your boiler needs to be started up every so often in order to maintain its performance. So, when the weather is sunny and warm, turn off your heat schedule and save on energy costs, wait for a cooler evening to put the heating on for twenty minutes, then turn it off again.

Check the pressure

A boiler needs to maintain optimum pressure in order to run smoothly, and lack of this will cause it to stop functioning. If you take a look at your boiler, you should be able to see a pressure gauge on the front. The reading should be between 1 and 1.5 in order for the system to work properly. If it’s fallen below this, find the two valves beneath the boiler and turn them – the pressure should immediately start to rise – then close them again. If you'd rather not do this yourself, get in touch with ProTech and we’ll send a Gas Safe engineer to fix the problem quickly and affordably.

Invest in a magnetic filter

Though you won’t be able to see it, chances are your central heating system contains lots of small particles. When these are left to build up they can cause the boiler to break down, plus even very small amounts circulating within the system will result in your boiler’s lifetime being gradually reduced. The solution is a magnetic filter, as this grabs all of the detritus and helps your boiler to run more efficiently and live much longer. If you'd like to know more, get in touch and ask about our range of magnetic filters.

Book a regular service

Having your boiler serviced annually by a Gas Safe engineer is absolutely essential. Not only will this ensure the ongoing performance of the boiler, it also protects your household from carbon monoxide leaks and keeps your manufacturer warranty valid. Our engineers respect your home, always arriving on time, carrying out an exemplary service and leaving everything clean and tidy aftwerwards.
