Don’t worry if you don’t know the difference from a combi boiler to a hot water cylinder. Our surveyor will explain this on their visit. But in the meantime, you will see below we have put together some images and information on the various boiler and system types. This will help you to identify your system and explain the differences in combi boiler, system boiler and regular boiler.

Combi boiler

new combi boiler

One of our most popular types of new boiler is the combination, or ‘combi’, boiler. It is a high efficiency gas water heater and a central heating boiler in a single compact unit. Combi boilers heat water direct from the water mains when you turn on a hot water tap, so you won’t need a hot water cylinder in the airing cupboard or a cold water storage tank in the loft.

Combi boilers are a common choice for new boiler as they are one of the most cost-effective and energy-efficient – because water is heated instantaneously rather than being heated and then stored in a hot water cylinder. An added benefit is that hot water is pressurised from the mains, this means that you could get a powerful shower without the need for a shower pump.

• Compact sizes make combi boilers are ideal for smaller homes.

• Ideal where there is little or no loft space

• No need for a hot water cylinder which allows you to have free-up (airing cupboard)  living space

• Water tanks not needed which frees up a loft space for conversion

• No risk of pipework in loft freezing

• Less pipework in the home which could make the installation cheaper

Regular boiler

regular boiler installation

Regular boilers (sometimes known as traditional, conventional or heat only boilers) are typically suited to properties that already have a traditional central heating system and hot water system which are linked to a separate hot water cylinder.

If you are thinking of a regular type for your new boiler, you should bear in mind that these need a cold water storage tank in the loft to feed the hot water cylinder, as well as a f&e tank that maintains the water level of the central heating system.

Regular boiler may be the best solution for replacing an existing regular boiler if the property has an older radiator system, as it may not be able to cope with the higher water pressure (pressurised system) that is delivered by system boilers or combi boilers.

These new boilers are:

• Ideal for homes where multiple hot water outlets are used at the same time.

• A good option for where there are two or more bathrooms

• A good solution for areas where water pressure is low

• Compatible with solar water heating systems for a decrease carbon footprint and lower energy costs

System boiler

new system boilers

System boilers require a hot water cylinder for storing water, however the major heating and hot water system components are built into the boiler itself, making it quicker and easier to install.

When space is limited and you need a new boiler that won’t take up too much room, a new system boiler would be ideal as they don’t require tanks. Tanks for other boilers are are usually located in the loft.

If you are looking at new boilers that can be fitted with solar water heating systems, which deliver great environmental benefits as well as lowering energy bills, system boilers are a great solution.

• Great for properties with more than one bathroom

• Constant supply of hot water to multiple taps at the same time

• No need for a loft tank, freeing up space and eliminating worries about leaks and frozen pipes

• Economical to run

• Built-in parts makes the installation quicker and easier
