Working in the industry for several years, we’re often asked plenty of questions relating to each of the services we offer. In this blog, we’ve picked the top five questions we’re asked in relation to boiler servicing to answer. Find out what a boiler service is, how it’s different from other options, the kind of thing we check for, how much they cost and how often you should be having a service.
What is a boiler service?
A boiler service is a manual inspection carried out by a trained plumbing or heating engineer that is used to ensure a boiler is operating as intended and without faults. Just like your car needs a regular service and MOT to ensure its running properly, a boiler requires servicing for the same reasons.
A boiler is a working, mechanical machine and they do go wrong and develop issues from time to time. A boiler service exists to both reduce the likelihood of your boiler failing, and to keep it running at maximum performance and efficiency year after year. You can see more benefits of a boiler service in our latest blog here.
What is the difference between boiler service and repair?
A boiler service and repair may seem to be very similar on face value, but they are actually used for entirely different purposes. A boiler service is used to prevent failure and ensure maximum performance. A boiler repair, however, is generally used after a boiler failure in order to get the boiler working correctly again. Boiler servicing is used to reduce the chance of an emergency boiler repair being required.
A boiler service tends to occur at the same time each year on a regular schedule as it is planned. A repair usually happens when your boiler fails unexpectedly and on an emergency basis.
What does a boiler service include?
Used to prevent failure, a boiler service includes a thorough inspection in the aim of identifying any potential issues which could lead to a fault. This includes;
- Ensuring that all controls are working correctly.
- Looking for any signs of leaking or corrosion.
- Checking the pressure in the system.
- The cleaning of any dirty components.
- Check for any safety concerns such as gas or carbon monoxide leaks.
All of our gas safe engineers follow strict checklists and guidelines when carrying out a boiler service, so you can rest assured your system is running exactly as it should be.
How often should you service your boiler?
Similarly to a car, a boiler service should be carried out on a regular, 12 month basis. If a boiler fails, it can be very dangerous due to the risk of carbon monoxide so a yearly service is crucial to avoid any potential hazards.
It can also save you money by avoiding costly emergency repairs or new components that could be avoided with a regular service. At ProTech we can provide a handy notification to ensure you don’t miss your service.
How much does a boiler service cost?
The cost of a boiler service varies from provider to provider, but at ProTech our annual service costs just £79. This covers the essential checks and inspections your boiler will need. Or from just £14 per month, you can join our boiler cover plans which cover everything from annual services to plumbing and gas supply pipework.
