Central heating and boilers explained

If you’re thinking about upgrading your central heating system and or purchasing a new boiler, then it’s important to understand what the different types and how they work.

The size, type and make of boiler can all affect how much energy you use and how your home and hot water is heated.

When it comes to what type of boiler, there are three main types to consider:

  • Combi
  • Conventional
  • System

Below we have some information on conventional and combi boilers to help explain the differences. (System boilers are very similar to conventional boilers. If you’d like to know more about the differences, our heating surveyor can explain them to you.)

Combi boilers

Combi, or combination boilers, are the UK’s most popular type of boiler. They can also be the most economical option for your home, as combi boilers only heat the water you use.

Why get a new combi boiler?

  • You get unlimited hot water whenever you need it because it heats it's water straight from the mains
  • No need for a cold water storage tank or hot water cylinder, so you save space. That means, if space is a concern or if you live in a smaller house or flat, a combi boiler may be the perfect solution.
  • Less pipework in the home which could make the installation cheaper.

What to consider

  • If you use more than one shower at a time, it can reduce the flow of hot water. But that does also depend on the strength of your incoming mains water pressure and flow rate.
  • It may take a few seconds for your hot water to heat up.

Conventional boilers

People also refer to them as regular or heat-only boilers. They heat up your radiators and your hot water cylinder.

Why get a new conventional boiler?

  • They send good water flow to your hot taps, allowing more than one tap to be used at the same time.
  • If you have an electrical immersion heater fitted to the hot water cylinder, you'll have a back-up, just in case your new boiler breaks down.
  • Good option if you have a large home that has more than one bathroom.

What to consider

  • To get the most out of your conventional boiler, we recommend setting your time controls so that you don't heat the water in you cylinder at times when it is not needed.
  • You only get as much hot water as your cylinder can store. So if it runs out you’ll need to wait until it heat up again.

How much does a new boiler installation cost?

The cost of installing a new boiler differs depending on the brand, size, output and maximum flow rate. The more powerful the boiler, the more it’s likely to cost. Rather than trying to cut costs, you’ll need to choose your boiler replacement based on the requirements of your home.

Price is likely to be an important factor when fitting your new boiler, so it’s best to work out which type will be the most cost effective with regards to installation, as well as in the future. In some cases, installing the same boiler type (e.g. combi boiler for combi boiler) could be the most cost effective, however this is not always the case, nor is it always the best choice. If you feel like your home could benefit from having another boiler type installed it may be best to switch.

Our experienced team of plumbers and heating engineers will provide you with the help and advice you need to make the best decision for you and your home.

In most circumstances, replacing an old or non-efficient boiler can save upwards of £200 yearly in heating costs.

Upon surveying your current situation, we’ll be able to give you a better idea as to what specific savings you can expect through upgrading with Protech Boilers. Contact us to find out how much you could be saving each and every year.

You can expect a new boiler to last up to 15 years. If your boiler is reaching that 15-year mark, it may be worth considering a replacement or an upgrade. This will ensure your boiler stays efficient and safe.

At Protech, we’re trusted suppliers and installers of a whole range of boiler brands including Ideal, Vaillant and Worcester. We also have gas safe engineers capable of installing all types of boilers including combi, conventional, system, gas and LPG boilers.

If you’re looking to purchase a new boiler and replace your existing boiler, there’s no charge for the initial removal of the old boiler. Before installation, one of our professional surveyors will provide a fixed quote for the replacement. This means no need to worry about the cost upping at any point.

As for the cost, you can get a new boiler from as little as £12.92 per month. You can find out more about the cost and available payment options here.

Obviously this varies greatly between specific situations, but we may be able to give you an idea based on a few factors.

If you’re having a new system installed, that is not just replacing an existing system, this could take anywhere between one day and a few days depending on the type of system. This is because if new piping or a flue is required to be installed, it’s a lot of additional work other than simply fitting a new boiler into an existing system.

A more simple replacement of an existing boiler within the same system will likely take one day and maybe two in some cases. This depends on a few things such as the compatibility between the two boilers. Your new boiler may require more or less piping which is all additional work and time.

Ultimately, we’ll be able to provide you with a time estimate upon request for your specific case. If you’re looking to buy a new boiler, request a free fixed price no-obligation quote today.

If you’re a homeowner, a Gas Safety Record is not required by law. However, you should still get your gas appliances and boiler inspected yearly by a Gas Safe Registered engineer. This will avoid any unwanted failures.

Landlords, however, legally require a Gas Safety check to be carried out on an annual basis as well as after new installations. This is part of the Gas Safety Regulations of 1998.

The easiest way to stay safe and ensure you meet any legal requirements is by signing up for a boiler cover plan. This will cover the necessary checks and services. You can find our array of boiler cover plans here.

Although we can’t tell you exactly how much value a new boiler will add to your home, GoCompare teamed up with Henry Pryor to provide an estimation. They found that installing a new boiler in your home could add up to £9,024.84 worth of value to your house.

This means, after taking away the average cost of a new boiler, you can see a profit of £7,029.84 in a best-case scenario.
